cucumbers…..

growing up i remember visiting my grandparents in virginia and eating cucumbers, carrots, beans, straight from the garden.
my grandmother prepared the cucumbers very simply – a little vinegar, sugar, and salt & pepper to taste – they were delicious!
once we started picking our cucumbers, we kept finding more, and more, and more…..

we decided to line them all up from smallest to largest……. then figure out which was the largest cucumber in the bunch.

i have been away from my computer and this blog for the five weeks that we have been visiting family on the east coast. i did have my camera but did not even take it everywhere so there are many gaps in our travel. i wanted to share some of the pictures from the south carolina coast and the north carolina mountains. i have absolutely no cooking or food pictures because i cooked very little besides slicing tomatoes, steaming shrimp, and cooking butterbeans.
this kind of time away is a reminder to me that being healthy is more than eating and cooking seasonal, whole foods. of course, i love the cooking part but that is the easy part for me. moments away from the city and our schedules allow me to breathe fresh air, enjoy my family, learn to let things go by abandoning routines, and to remember what it feels like to be a child in the summer. this is healthy living even if your child has lots of ice cream cones, you have wine every night, and bedtime is postponed because of late swims..

We are back in san francisco where i can’t wait to get back in my kitchen- the late summer produce in california is gorgeous so i am excited for the farmers market on saturday morning..
i have made a list of the many things i am dying to cook and share!
what are you all cooking in your summer kitchens?
